ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 26 mm, 2.85 g, 7 h), Arab-Sasanian type, klmʾn-NAL (Kirmān-Nar[māshir]?), ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, rival caliph (AH 60-73 / AD 680-692), AH 67 = 686/7. Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt'’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾp̄dwlʾ / Y zwbylʾn’, i.e. ‘Abdulā ī Zubayrān’ (‘ʿAbd Allah son of al-Zubayr’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh’ (‘In the name of Allah’ in Kufic), followed by an illegible Pahlavi word. Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, klmʾn-NAL (the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 15. Rare mint.
